He was strong, though. I could see his bulging arm muscles through rips in his sleeves as he held me steadily with one hand. My lungs were crying for air, my panic surging.

Hybrid. This was a Hybrid. Evil, demonic, unnatural.

“This one smells different.” His voice was a growl, coarse and jeering. Who was he talking to?

“She could be one of those sky humans Manta’s been talking about. We’ll be rewarded well if we return with one of them.” Nux, there was another one. His voice was coming from the direction of Dawna. Where was she? Had she escaped?

“Take the other one.” My captor sneered at me again, this time licking his ridiculously long, sharp canines. “The more the merrier.”

It was then I heard Dawna’s murmur. She sounded barely conscious. I tried to call to her, but the Hybrid’s fingers around my neck were too tight, reminding me of Dybgo’s crushing grip. I was going to pass out soon. I needed to do something to save myself, to save Dawna.

Using his hand around my neck as leverage, I jumped and forcefully kicked him in the stomach, then the groin. With a grunt, he dropped his grip, but before I could react, his fist collided with my stomach, sending me staggering down to the floor.

Clutching my stomach with one hand and holding my neck with the other, I wheezed, trying to crawl away. I heard his growl a moment before my head was yanked backwards. He was tugging at my braid, pulling me to my feet. The sting of pain at my scalp caused tears to form in the corners of my eyes.

My back crashed against his solid body and my fingers fumbled for my dagger on my hip. Still pulling my hair back and down, I was forced to stare skywards. From behind, he loomed over me, meeting my petrified gaze with his dark, taunting smirk. He was tall. Far taller than the average human male. I had no chance of winning a fight against him.
